French/Pirate Fleet lost in 1678 on reefs near Las Aves Island

April 28, 2004 at 15:33:07

I have just read this book by Barry Clifford about a French armada which was wrecked on a reef near Las Aves Island in 1678, while chasing some Dutch ships from the Carribean Island Curacao, which Island the French so desperately wanted to occupy.

Stories like this are incredible fascinating and hard to believe that they really happened only just a couple of hundreds of years ago, but they did.

Unfortunately Clifford did not have the right diving permits from the Venezuelan authorities, so he was not allowed to excavate the wrecks. So there is hardly any info about artefacts......

I have heard stories from people who have visited Curacao that in calm weather Spanish helmets are found on the reefs...????

Does anyone has any info for me on this subject? Maybe people has dived there and tell me their story?

Hope to hear from someone, because to me this seems to be one of the most fascinating stories I have heard lately

Thanks in advance

Nick
