Coin cleaning

May 06, 1998 at 20:12:55

This past Sunday I found an 1804 large cent in a field in Stony Brook, LI, NY. I can see an outline of Miss Liberty, faint letters where the word libery should be and a pretty clear date. I cleaned the dirt off with a tooth brush and warm water. The coin has alot of oxidation on it.

Does anyone have any suggestions on further cleaning. Should I try to remove the corrosion? Will removing the corrosion show more or less coin detail? I would like to display it with my other finds but right now it just looks like a very dark brown disk. Is a decorroded coin worth alot less?

As you can see I have alot of questions, but I'd rather ask before I do the wrong thing.

Thanks for any help.
