Steve, I always answer questions before I read anyone else's answer so that I don't color my reply. We've all gone through that aggravating part of the hobby, and still do and, maybe, always will. Here's a couple of suggestions. Learn to pinpoint accurately before you give in to the digging part. The target HAS to be under the width of your coil which, if it's a "normal" coil will be around 8". If the machine cannot detune, the target may be right under the surface. TRY to use a probe to touch the target before you start to dig. If you cannot touch it because it could be a coin on edge, etc., then before you make the (smallest) hole (possible), spread a handkerchief-size dirt collector so that your digging area stays neat/clean looking. I'm gonna make this short as I sometimes get carried away with 20 years' experience to share. If you cannot learn the above methods simply do as some of the other folk here do and get yourself and electronic pinpointer. Better that than carving canyons looking for possibly a hot rock. If you need more help you can e-mail me. Edward/NYC.
