Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained

Sad Story: My brother and I opened our families summer cottage in Maine last weekend, did some detecting but nothing spectacular. Since Maine wasn't producing we decided to leave early Sunday morning and investigate a ghost town in Southern New Hampshire that I was given directions to over the winter by my brother-in-law. It added about 2 hours to our return trip but what the heck, as the title says... The directions were perfect, deep in the woods down a dirt path lined with fieldstone walls. As we approached the opening we began to see the cellar holes and more old colonial stone walls. What we also saw were 4 people raking and cleaning an 1 room house in the middle of those woods, pretty strange. After talking with them we came to find out that the 200 acre town was started in 1725 and that there still remained 12 foundations from that period. The bad news was that the land was donated to a preservation society and was off limits for Th'ers. They would be, however, assembling a crew of archeologists in the future. With our chins in our chests we drudged though the woods back to the truck. Oh, well, I guess you have to check all leads and hope for the best. Maybe next time things will work out...Jack
