Another possibility...

For a point of reference, take a metal bucket or a large metal lid and lay it on the ground then take your detector and scan over top of it. Take note on how many feet away you have to raise the loop before you stop getting a signal. Now lower the loop down until you just start getting the signal again. Now (while the loop is still in the air) try to pin point. Does the pin pointer act like it's small? I wonder if sometimes the object is really big and deep. My XLT gets fooled sometimes with this senario.
