Civil War Carbine Sling Buckle
August 19, 1998 at 11:37:18
I just got back from a great trip hunting a Civil War cavalry camp where I found what I think might be a pretty good buckle. Since I've been back, my research indicates the buckle is from a carbine sling used with all the Spencer and Burnside carbines the boys at this camp had (we probably found over 200 bullets and cartridges). The buckle is in near mint condition, and has "T.J. Shepard" stamped on the back, as well as "E. Gaybord, Chicopee, Mass" on the back of it. Any information about the buckle would be greatly appreciated, including rarity and value, if anybody knows it. (I've seen that E. Gaybord was a manufacturer of Civil War plates and buckles, but the ones in the book I looked at say "Springfield, Mass" vs. Chicopee. Thanks much, and happy hunting!
