No finds, but still a lucky day!

At the edge of our small 19th century town is the large farm and residence of the town founder, built in 1869 but no longer owned by his family. It is a site I have often drooled over, but never yet worked up the guts to go knock on the door and ask permission to hunt. Last week I saw that the 10 acre field next to the house had been sold to condo developers and I resolved to try to hunt it as soon as the dozers moved in. Today they began stripping the field, and after work I stopped and got permission from the foreman to check the dirt piles near the fence line between the development and the house. I hunted for about 90 minutes, not finding anything worthwhile, and eventually moving past the dirt piles and into an area still along the fence that the dozers hadn't hit yet. Within 5 minutes the owner of the house came out and started walking towards me. Uh Oh.. I thought.. Maybe this is still his property and he's gonna raise hell. Instead, he INVITED ME ONTO HIS LAND to hunt around the old privy pits that he had discovered! We talked for a while and found we had some things in common, both of us being employed in the electronic security industry and with an interest in local history. He said his brother-in-law had talked about coming out and MD'ing the property, but it had never happened. It wound up with his giving me not only permission to hunt the 3 acre site whenever I liked, but also tips on other places around the township where I could beep! What a nice guy! Since I was already late for dinner, I only checked around the privy pits for a few minutes- but from what I found, it appears to be a virgin site. (Silver plated spoon, mason jar lids and stuff that most MD'ers would have cleaned out) I think this is gonna be FUN! I'll keep you posted...
