Hey Barb, Most all brands of detectors are calibrated

to give correct depth readings only on coin shaped objects.

You'll find that coins will give a pretty accurate

depth reading. Because of the alloy that is used in jewelry, the karat, the size and weight, gold may

respond anywhere on the meter. However, a high

percentage read as nickle or foil. No matter how

careful you cover the holes you will damage the area

you are hunting. By digging foil and nickle IDs you will still get your share of gold. Hope this helps.

Best of luck

T. L. "Bert" Green
