Silver and Relics (long post)

February 01, 1999 at 05:41:33

Hunted 2 sites this weekend -- one which was researched and one which was stumbled across by blind luck (at my partner's suggestion). The first was at the site of an old pre-CW church and home. Found 4 silver coins (from the 1940s) by the old homesite, a roundball and 3-ringer, and a thin, flat, oblong, reeded disk that may be some kind of plantation token (per Jim in upstate NY). The 2nd site was a wooded area where a housing development is just starting to go in. My partner and I decided to briefly stop and check it out before heading to another site. After about 5 swings of my coil, I was surprised to find an old button. It had a large star on it made up of numerous raised "bumps", and had a finely-grided background. The back had an intact shank with a Waterbury backmark. By an extreme coincidence, I saw the identical button that evening while reading the Mar 99 issue of W&ET which just came that day. Its on pg 32 (top picture), and is the button just to the right of the breast plate (the one with the star). Can any button experts out there identify this one? I couldn't find it in Albert's. Also found 5 roundballs at the site. Will be back for sure after more dirt has been moved.
