basement digging/coal bins

September 17, 1998 at 18:09:12

Hi all !

welp, I get this call...the concrete truck would arrive and the floor get poured into a 120+ yr old house. I had to go hunt right then or miss out. So there I was sweeping the dirt floors well into the night.

The best old coins came from the coal bin. I got a 1936 & 1942 wheatie and an 1898 barber dime. Since I've only been at this 2 months the dime was my oldest coin so far. Unfortunately the sulphuric acid generated by the decaying coal's impurities caused the dime to corrode. It appeared this type of dime may be partially brass or something...I thought they were solid silver..oh well. It looked rough, but was a neat find. The pennies cleaned up perfectly.

I found all sorts of other stuff: clay marbles, crockery marbles, lead globs, a tiny lead bell (similar to a charm), buckles, buttons etc.

ya'll have a good one! HH
