Did anyone else read the news article of the Death Valley cache?

January 19, 1999 at 10:39:27

Today's paper ran a story about an archaeologist finding a chest full of 1840's stuff. Apparently they've traced it to an ill-fated gold rush traveler, in a party of 100 people who came out to CA in 1849. The emmigrants started out in Utah, and tried to go the southern route into CA. They went through Death Valley, and ended up North of what is now Los Angeles. In Death Valley, they had hard times, so one of the persons stashed this chest in a cave, and never made it back to claim it. It had books, letters, a gun, photographs, china, and 80 pieces of currency, including $5 & $10 gold pieces and silver dollars. They valued the find at $500,000! Oh well, I guess the archies deserve a nice find now and then too! :)
