Newbie needs advice

August 19, 1999 at 03:21:31

After finding these forums and reading about all the great finds, I lost interest in clad coins on playgrounds and the beach. For a change this week I hit the lawn of a small church built in the 40's and came up with about 50 wheat cents, a dozen Mercs, 2 buffalos and a 51' quarter. Although digging down 5 1/2" in tough soil is no fun, the results were very satisfying. So yesterday I went to the library and found out our downtown area was built between 1895 and 1920. An old map shows hundreds of homes and small buildings, but today high-rise office buildings occupy most of the area. Here and there between the buildings, however, are some empty lots. Do you guys think they would be worth detecting? The reason I ask is because these areas are in kind of a scary part of town, and I hate to risk my life for nothing if you catch my drift. There are also old unused railroad tracks in the same area as well. Not too far away are also some tiny original homes that appear to be used as low-income housing today. Any tips on how to proceed from here would be appreciated. Kent
