Yes, May tenth 1837 Specie Payments were suspended due
to the severe depression gripping the nation (I suppose
you already knew this, hitting the nail on the head as you did). The date on your coin is 1841, and as you describe it I can't find a perfect match in my book. It
dosen't sound like it has an error, it's just damaged.
Very similar tokens, range in price (v.fine)...$10-$20. Have an expert check it out. HH, David
