Hi Bill,Nice find on the large cent.It always gets my heart going when one pops out of the ground.I just asked the same question on the photo forum and the advice I got was to soak it in olive oil for a few weeks then brush it gently with a solf toothbrush and mild soap and rinse it often.Repeat until clean.Be sure to be gentle with it don't be in a hurry.Just started to soak mine a couple of days ago.I'm not sure what you mean by chipping and I don't know what to tell you about that but I'd find out before I did anything to it.Good luck with it and I hope it turns out in mint condition for you.
