Silvery Kinda' Day

September 03, 1999 at 18:03:31

Friday afternoon, summer hours at work , the last of the summmer.I get out at 1:00 with 4 hours in front of me to do nothing but hunt, guilt free. Wife is occupied, son in school. I will miss these times. I got permission to do a house in the same neighborhood as the house where I found my 1818 25c piece on Tues. I thought this house was old too, but the owner, who was one hell of a nice guy, said the house was only built in the 1940s, but his family has lived in the area since 1699 and at one time owned an incredible amount of land inthe area. He told me to help myself then left to go to back to work after eating his lunch.Alone on a beautiful day with two acres of lawn. To make a long story short, I didn't find much in the back yard, but the front was another story. I found this hole that just kept spewing silver. First shovel full gave me a 1935 Washington and a 1957 Rosie, but the signal was still strong. Next shovel gave me a 1951 Quarter, then finally on the third shovel, the catch of the day, a 1927 Standing Liberty, my first.(lesson one-always recheck your hole) I had this down as one of my goals for this year. There were a bunch of Wheaties mixed in with all the silver, creating quite a frenzied scene. Must of been some kids treasure hiding place. Thanks kid where ever you are for making my day.I went on to find a 1937 Merc, a 1961 Rosie and a 1947 Canadian Dime. I also found a Large Cent, that is in pretty bad shape, but leads me to believe I have got to go back and do some slooow hunting. PS: I came home, spent some time with the family, then went out just before sunset to a house in town being rehabed. Just enough time to find a 1921 Walking Liberty Half (then being chased by a nosey neighbor). I think my dry streak is officially over. Best wishes for a fine weekend holiday hunt to you all.
