Yesterday was the first nice Saturday here in the NE, so I figured this morning would be a fine time to hit the local park.

I got out about 6:30 AM and by 8 I had a pocket full of coins (and a pouch full of pull tabs and other junk). I was working the stone wall along the stream that runs through the park, when I got a fairly strong, but broken reading close to the surface. About 1.5 in. down was a penny. Since I had just found a quarter and penny together about five minutes before, I rechecked the hole.

This time i got a very clear ring/tab signal, so just in case, I dug a little deeper, and sure enough, there was another pull tab. Disgusted, I was just about to fix the hole when I decided to scan once more, and I got a fainter reading on the scale just below the last.

Having the old timers hammer it into my head that "when in doubt, DIG" payed off. About 5 in. down, below the penny and below the tab, was a nickel. But not just any nickel. The first thing I noticed as I rubbed off the dirt was a big 'D' over the dome. It turned out to be a 1945D silver war nickel, and my first silver of the year.

Forgive me if I make a big deal out of nothing special, but the moral of this story is persistence. Without it, you'll never get to the good stuff.

Good luck to all.
