I have a button just like you describe except mine is 1 1/2 inches across. I just inherited hundreds of very old buttons from my grandmother. She used to work in a fabric mill called Stryers here in Maine. Another really interesting one is made of a coin about the size of a fifty cent piece and says ARCHID AUS DUX OSW ZAT 1776. Anyonh have a clue? Another is hammered and says ROSTIO DE WAR REGNAT 1506?
