I have used Vietnam era mine detectors for years, they are the transistorized variety with a retangular search coil. If this is what you are getting you will find that this detector will pickup every nail and piece of iron trash made. However if you have a chance to use one on a salt water beach you will fall in love with it quickly. The first thing of course is the battery, needs 10.5 volts, 7 AA bat will work fine and are good for 30-50 hours, soldering the bat together helps keep circuit "squeek" out. several companys made these for the Army, Fourdee Co. 4D5000 the VP Co. VP200 and Polan P-158, are all I know of. If this is the type you are getting let me know if I can be of help.
