There are several books on treasure signs. Carson-HB of Treasure Signs and Symbols Kenworthy-Treasure, Shadow, Sun Signs Kenworthy-Spanish Monuments to Treasure Chastain-Follow the Signs (new)

And there are several more.

These are all OK BUT, if I am marking a treasure or mine in the wilds of the West, I am probably not carrying around my handy guide to which mark means which thing and therefore there are many variations.

Plus, some markings are just doodles left by sheepherders or other bored folks or to mislead. Some are survey markers.

Also, if I were putting down signs, in order for them to be identifiable only to someone I wanted to know, I would change things around, like when it says north, go south, etc.

That's why signs cannot always be taken at face value and different investigators may have a wide range of interpretation.

Steve
