Lost $40,000
August 20, 1998 at 16:23:58

I was at the pope county Arkansas library today and found this article North near the upper end of the gin slough on a bench high above the water was the home of Jim Rushing. Only a beautilully walled-up dug well and catalpa trees mark the site North and East about half a mile was the home of Aunt Peggy Rye A sergeant carrying an Army payroll once spent the night at her home. He knew he was being followed by renegades. He got up next morning before daylight and rode on his way. He was killed near the mill. He did not have the $40,000 legendary money on him. He is thought to have hid it between the Rye home and the cotton gin Many have sought the money but it has remained well hidden as far as is know.
