Tom - your carving may represent the royal crown as you suspect, but based upon what I've seen in another part of NM, your symbol may mean something different. There is a very striking local landmark in the southern part of the state known as Monte Cristo Rey that some believe was identified and mapped by a European padre in 1539. The natural intaglio is a bearded face wearing a crown and represents Jesus as either the King of Kings or wearing the crown of thorns. Maybe you've found a man-made counterpart.
