Seems reasonable. Human minds seem to work about the same from century to century, and when travellers were being waylaid by highwaymen along the public traces, hiding valuables at night would have made sense. Similarly, people seem to have consistently thought that hiding valuables under the floors of cabins was an original idea and many did it.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that along the Natchez trace someone has found valuables which were probably buried for the night by travellers who didn't retrieve them in the morning for one reason or another.
