Belle Starr's Iron door cache. Located in the Wichita mtns of southern Oklahomah. In the mid-1880s Belle Starr and her gand stopped a train bound for the Denver mint with a cargo of government gold. They selected a cave in which to stash the loot. On leaving the robbery they snatched an iron railcar door and dragged it to the hiding place. The iron door was placed over the opening of the cache cave, secured with an intricate lock and covered it with rock and brush. During a second train robbery all of the gang was killed. Belle Starr herself was murdered mysteriously in 1889. With her death, no one knew where the cache was. Soon after the turn of the century, a local rancher and his son were riding the Wichita Wildlife Refuge toward Indiahoma, located on the south side of the range. They took a shortcut skirting Elk mountain and entering a deep canyon. as the sun was setting a bright reflection from one canyon wall caught their attention. They investigated and found a large rusted door set into a recessed area along the canyon wall. The boy wanted investigate further, but it was getting dark quickly. There are many who have found and lost this door. Most claim it is just north of treasure lake. In 1932 an itinerant farm laborer was walking from Hobart to Lawton going through the Wichita mtns. He went by Elk mountain. As he hiked he saw the rusted door. He could'nt open it without tools. He went into town. Like everyone else he could not find it again. Good hunting!!!
