The original Adams party massacre by Magnas Coloradas and his Apache Indians occurred in 1838. Adams lead the first of his two later expeditions to try to find the Lost Adams Diggings in 1864. The KGC story could have become entwined with this later search by Adams, but the original massacre predated the KGC story you reference by nearly 25 years. Therefore, the original Adams legend started prior to the KGC events noted.
