Roger: This is the first time I've heard a date attached to this story prior to the 1860's. My understanding of the Anglo history of western NM in the 1830's is that only a handful of Americans were present in the area - they were trappers and explorers based at the Santa Rita copper mines where they could obtain supplies from Mexico. Granted, there were numerous undocumented Mexican prospectors in the area in the early 19th century, but the first actual gold strike reported by Anglos was at Pinos Altos, NM, ca. 1860. So your 1838 date seems unique. Do you mind sharing the source of your information?
Hillbilly: thanks for your input - you kinda left us hanging at the end though. Are we to assume from this and your earlier KGC references that Rebel gold was hidden in western NM for later retrieval, and that the "Adams Diggings" tale was fabricated in order to establish a lasting memory of its general location? If that's the case, then searchers should be looking for a cache instead of a zigzag canyon with a rich placer deposit. This would certainly explain why there are so many gaping holes in the stories Adams told over the years, and would obviously finger Adams himself as a Confederate agent. Right?
