KGC article for those who ask for it!

This article appeared the Treasure Hunter Express Summer 1996 I think?

REBEL TREASURES ARE REAL Bob (Hillbilly Bob) Brewer The Confederate Underground left no public files to prove that they ever existed. Historians use this lack of hard documentation to argue that the stories about the Rebel Underground are pure folklore. Unfortunately those historians have not any of the documents that do exist. However, even if they were shown the old Knights of the Golden Circle papers the would somehow have to discredit them or admit much of the history they've written is flawed. Since the early part of this century old Rebel documents and treasure maps have been discovered in the personal belongings of deceased Confederates. Around 1950 Knights of the Golden Circle documents were found in two old steamer trunks purchased at auctions or estate sales. One of these trunks came from South Texas the other from Alabama. Hidden beneath a false bottom in the Texas trunk, were revealed over a hundred separate documents dated from 1861 through 1889. The papers were letters, maps and two strange drawings of a compass rose. The compass, two circles superimposed over a square with a cross in the middle, has dots and rectangles arranged in a pattern across the face. A transparency drawn of the pattern must overlay the maps in order to learn where the treasure caches are buried. Larry Williams, a couple of years ago, published a similar compass rose, in his newsletter. I have met other TH’ers with similar documents, some of which I have viewed. The persons in possession of these papers are very cautious and will not permit copies of them to be made.

TREASURE DEPOSITORIES The documents reveal the Rebel Treasures are ingeniously placed in a network of depositories laid out with unbelievable accuracy. The master depository system is a nationwide network of precisely mapped areas varying in size from a mile or two in diameter in heavily timbered regions to 40 miles wide in open country. There are supposedly sixteen separate treasure regions spread across America. In each of these regions, there is one really large cache. In each of these 16 huge caches is a safe. The safe contains a tube holding maps to the depositories. Documents state these tubes are made of rabbit hides, fur side in, sealed by dipping them into molten beeswax. Once sealed, the tubes were covered with a thick coating gun grease or tar then rolled up in a water proof oil cloth. The package was then placed inside a copper tube which was sealed with solder. The old documents do not make it clear whether every major depository holds the maps to all the depositories or if only one Master Safe holds them all. It is not known if any of these Master Caches have been opened, but some evidence points to Victorio Peak, in New Mexico, as being one of the Master Depositories. Each of the sixteen treasure regions is divided into several smaller divisions. The divisions are likewise dividend in smaller segments and these are further divided into depositories. Some segments may have only one treasure depository while others may have several. Its possible that individual treasure depositories may join or even overlap one another. The depositories are cleverly designed and without knowing the system used to bury the treasure, the caches are quite safe. Understanding the layout of one depository does not guarantee you will be able to figure out another. Generally, once inside a depository area, treasure markings are not difficult to find. Signs and markers may be almost anything, from mounds of earth to a distant mountain top. Bends in streams, pruned or trimmed trees, strangely shaped or chipped rocks have all been used. The search for Rebel treasure is like scavenger hunt. A sign or symbol will indicate, what clue you are required to find. The clue, then, may direct you to the next clue, cause you to want to dig or deliberately run you in circles just to waste your time. THE DEPOSITORY GUARD Once the depository system was established, it took years to fill the depositories with loot. Once a treasure was placed in a depository, a guard or sentinel was assigned to the area. This person was responsible for the treasures and checked cache site several times a week. Sentinels were the trustworthiest members in the group. In most cases the sentinel was a soldier with an excellent war record, or the son or grandson of the above. All sentinels were proficient with a firearm and quick to shoot. There are many TH’ers that are convinced that the sentinel system still exists, even today! Sentinels pretended to work at occupations which allowed them to inspect the caches frequently without arousing suspicion. The system used in burying the treasures, unknown to would be thieves, required anyone searching for a cache to dig several holes to retrieve clues. Digging was what the sentinel watched for. The first indication that someone had dug a hole caused the sentinel to stalk anyone entering the depository. When he had determined the identity of the person or persons attempting to steal from the organization, their execution came swiftly and secretly. SIGNS, SYMBOLS, CLUES For over a century the strange signs and symbols found throughout America are said to have been made by Indians or the Spanish. Thousands of these old carvings have been destroyed by persons determined to prevent someone else from seeing them and finding the treasure first. Sadly many of those signs were not even treasure signs. The few that did relate to treasure, by being vandalized ensures those treasure caches are now really "Lost Treasure." Eye catchers are the signs you look for when scouting a treasure layout. These are the signs you normally see in newspapers and magazines when someone just can’t wait to tell about the treasure sign they found. (Bless their heart, I love them) The eye catcher, as I call it, is intended to be seen by someone on a trail or road that is looking for it. It may be a hoot owl tree, a rock monument, even a carving of an arrowhead or animal. One particular regiment of the Rebel Underground used a large phallic symbol which appears to have been carved by a naughty boy. I have seen this several times and usually money is less than a mile away from this symbol. After you have discovered the eye catcher, search the entire area for more carvings. Sometimes within a few yards you will find other clues which provide information about the cache layout. Only a person familiar with Rebel signs would notice that the carvings are related. It may appear as someone’s initials or name. To the uninformed clues appear to be graffiti or carvings made by children playing. Any group of letters or numbers my be an important clue or even a waybill. If you find this type of situation check all the trees and rock ledges within one fourth mile for other markings. If there is a stream nearby go upstream and look along its banks for other signs. Chances are you will find something else. If not it may just have been an innocent carving that you found.

Every day an increasing number of amateur archeologists and historians search throughout America for ancient messages left by pre-Columbian explorers. I also collect and study these ancient signs. Often however, when these experts find Confederate markings they also classify them as ancient markings. If these folks only knew what they are missing. Don’t for a minute take me wrong. I appreciate what these folks are doing. It should have been done a hundred years ago. The coming months will prove to be very exciting to those who study these mysterious markings. The professors and learned experts have a real surprise coming when they finally learn how many of these ancient carvings were made less than a couple of hundred years ago. You will find these signs carved on stones, rock ledges or trees. To find signs on rocks look near the top of a hill on fairly smooth rock surfaces. The surface may be horizontal or vertical. Look in places protected from a direct exposure to the elements. Under an overhang is the most likely place. If the signs are on a horizontal surface they may be severely weathered and care must be taken to notice them. Often the signs will be covered with moss or lichens. If you must remove this covering to view the signs, do so with utmost caution. Be gentle and ensure you do not scratch the surface. PLEASE DO NOT DESTROY ANY OF THESE SIGNS. Here’s food for thought! Even when a person knows how to use these treasure signs, he must see them in their exact position to work the layout. If you destroy them you’ve just lost the treasure forever. Just as importantly, if they were not treasure signs they may have been a one of a kind link to a lost civilization! Believe me when I tell you that only one person in 100,000,000 can almost read the signs. Do not fear someone else beating you to your treasure, especially if you keep your mouth shut. Please photograph and video tape the signs if at all possible. Then throw leaves on the rock or rub wet moss and lichens on the carving. These plants will soon begin to grow and within a year or so the carvings will be almost hidden again. If you find the treasure, please record where the markings are located. The day will come when these signs will be highly important to historians and archeologists, all they need do is wake up to the fact that the Rebel treasures do exist! CIPHERS AND CODES The old Rebels that buried this treasure were experts in the use of secret codes and ciphers. It would take a large book to explain how to decipher the systems used by the Rebs. During the War the Rebel Secret Service used at least seven and perhaps several more secret ciphers. The KGC also had ciphers of its own design. Here is just a sample of the ciphers you might find.

Someday I will publish a book on the subject of Rebel Treasure signs. The old teachers have been dead for years and only two or three of their students are still alive. None of them will ever reveal any of the secrets. They hold the key to finding all of the treasures, the problem is they are too old to explore every mountain and stream bank in America looking for the depositories. That's our job and is the only reason I am telling you how to locate treasure layouts. Finding a Rebel depository is only 1% of the work it takes to find a cache. MAPS, WAYBILLS Authentic Rebel waybills come in all sizes and styles. If you are lucky enough to have a paper map don’t set on it hoping someday to work the cache. In almost every case the paper map can be reproduced by finding the carvings on rocks or trees in the treasure layout. In fact, it may be easier to use the field markings instead of the map if most of the clues are still undisturbed. Every map regardless of the type shows topographical features. It will also give distance measurements, directions, and what type of clue must be found to proceed to the next one and so on. If a distance is given it will be exact and you must measure carefully to reach the indicated place. Of primary importance are compass headings, they can be indicated in any number of ways. The most common method was to use code or hide the directions in a group of numbers or carve them in another place nearby. You may be given two or three directions. Of course only one is correct. Every sign you'll find can be used in more than one way. Often, the most important sign in the group of symbols will be hidden inside of another sign. Also, one symbol may have to be reused two or three times to read the message. Such as, in a Biblical code, often only one number will be given, this will indicate both the chapter and verse of the book in which the coded message will appear. If you don’t have a Bible this is a good reason to get one, because you will need it to hunt Rebel treasure. Besides you’ll find real treasure in that book!! The interpretation of any waybill is always more complicated than it appears. Simple logic will explain why! If anyone, who understood the basic treasure code, should find a sign or two, he could follow the signs right to the cache. That's why every treasure trail is different. Usually, one waybill is required just to locate the treasure area, and another more detailed map is needed to pinpoint the cache. Once you are within a few yards or so of the cache only a couple of more clues will be needed to bring it to a hole. But it is very important to get close first because it will drive you nuts looking for the loot before you find the cache indicator. This little critter is the hard one to find. Triangulation of several clues can get you real close but dry holes will haunt you until you are actually shown where to dig. Often TH’ers spend lots of money hiring firms to search for their suspected treasure using Ground Penetrating Radar, or other devises. These machines are great and should be used to locate large deep caches. But they can't find anything not in their search area. It is always quicker and less expensive to pinpoint the burial site then try conventional methods first. Most smaller caches can be found using a good detector with a large coil (12 inches up) or a two box unit operating within its limits. Unless you intend to move a mountain, the big depositories cannot be opened until you find the exact spot.

I hope this reads ok. It was not reedited after passing through the OCR so make the best of it.

God Bless
