Thanks for the information, HB. This elaborate conspiracy is certainly plausible as you relate it, but there is one major piece of this scenario that always seems to escape me: WHY?
What was the PURPOSE of this KGC/CU effort? I guess I can understand such an effort in the 1860's and 1870's - the feeling that "the South shall rise again", and a stashing of assets for such an effort sometime later. But how do you explain a continuation of this plan through the 1920's and even up to the present time? The CSA, though fondly embraced by some die-hard Rebs even today, has in fact been a dead entity for a long, long time. The type of people who were capable of managing this caching operation were certainly smart enough to realize this. So it seems too simple an answer to assume this long-term, methodical gold caching was carried out by a bunch of old bitter soldiers hoping for revenge some day.
Was there perhaps some OTHER motivation driving this plan that continues to live today? After all, a large number of well-organized, top-notch people would be needed to carry out all this prolonged activity the way you describe it. If there is not some continuing grand plan, then the obvious question is why haven't those in the know merely cashed in?
