Dry Tortugas Wreck - Atocha's sister ship?

March 08, 1998 at 22:04:39

SeaHawk salvaged a vessel in 1500 feet of water nicknamed 'The Dry Tortuga's Wreck' or, 'The Deep Water Wreck.' It was published as possibly being a sister ship to the Atocha, a smaller Nao, or perhaps a foundered period salvage vessel. In writing to SeaHawk they have replied that they believe they have it narrowed down to one of a few vessels, but will not state which one's. Does anyone have any idea's which one's might be candidate's? Does there exsist a list of all the vessel's that sailed with the Atocha from Havana? Why isnt it possible to identify the vessel by the recovered artifacts and their markings as was done with the Atocha and Santa Margarita and their silver and gold bars? Have all the manifests not been located and/or translated from the 1622 fleet? I realize this is a lot, but inquiring minds (at least my mind) would like to know. Thanks, Jim
