On page 236 of Zig Zag Canyon, Ron Feldman draws the conclusion that there were two massacres that have been confused over the years that Adams was involved in. The original Adams massacre took place prior to 1846 and was the one documented in Emory's field notes published in 1848. The other was around 1864 when Adams and Davidson went up the San Francisco River trying to relocate the gold. Many confuse this later massacre as the initial finding of the gold due to the writings of Dr. Spurgeon.
