I studied De Soto's explorations. It was well documented. He went all the way up to Lake Michigan in 1541 to 1544 before heading back south. Many cities in the Mid-west still bear Spanish names like Terre Haute Indiana! De Soto established mining colonies along the Ohio River and he found gold and silver on the Nolan River in Kentucky. One man from Bardstown found 15 Spanish monuments along the river and applied for a permit from the Army Corp. of Engineers to recover silver bars he found there. He thinks the indians massacred the Spanish miners.
