Hello Lou, My sources are: Dr. Douglas E. Jones of Huntsville, Dr. Fred P. Bowser of Stanford, Dr. Thomas Nechyba of Duke Univ., Dr. Jeffrey Brian of Harvard and Dr. Lawrence A. Clayton of U. of Alabama. You can see a map of De Soto's route (he arrived at Lake Michigan around Chicago area) at: http://www.floridahistory.com/inset78m html. De Soto's group did indeed find gold although not much of it. Didn't you read about the crude gold jewelry he took from the indians? This is what drove him to keep on going. Its also a famous description of Lake Michigan when De Soto calls it the "saltless sea."
