The area is named for the famous Brigadier General in command of the Indian Territory in 1861. Albert Pike is also credited with the writing the major part of the Masonic Rites.
Strangers came looking for Pike, thinking that he had hidden a stash of gold in the mountains. (They were determined to find it.)
Friends from Caddo Gap rushed over the mountain to tell Pike, who quickly jammed his papers and gold into containers and left the area. He rewarded his informants with a handful of gold.
The Caddo River was up, but the General's buggy plunged in, although the hack went under, all emerged safely. The General is said to have picked up the reins, cracked them and bid a quick good-bye to his friends as he sped into the night and was "gone with the wind," his long white hair flowing in the wind.
