I think your talking about Beal's Gold in VA. He visited(not sure of time, maybe turn of the century) an inn for 2 weeks and then returned 2 years later. When he departed the second time he left a box with instructions that if he did not return in 10 years the Inn keeper was to open it and it would lead him to a treasure.
The inkeeper waited 20 years to open the box and inside was three pages of code that still remains undeciphered. Hope that helps. The History Chanel just did a story on this and might have some links.
