Etiquette for detecting?
December 10, 2003 at 02:46:16

I'm brand new to detecting, I just picked up an old detector at an auction. On my first trip out with it I ran into trouble, and I want to know the proper thing to do.

Here's what happened... I took my detector down to a swimming beach at a local park. I checked in at the park ranger's office and told the ranger I wanted to use my detector on the beach (which is closed for the winter) he said fine, and told me anything I dig up I had to either keep or put in the trash, and to fill any holes I dug. Ok, those were the only rules. I went down to the beach, and I see two guys out using a detector. I thought great! I can get some pointers from them. I go down and say hi to the older guy who was using the machine, and tell him I'm new at this and can he give me any pointers. He says "yeah, get off my beach." So I told him I checked in with the ranger and got permission to use my detector on the beach. His reply was "F*** the ranger, I told you to get out of here. This is my beach and nobody searches it but me." So I went down to the other end of the beach (about 100 yds away) and started to use my machine, about 5 min later the younger of the two guys comes running down the beach, and starts yelling at me. "My dad told you to get off the beach c***sucker, leave or I'm going to kick your ass" Now, I had a couple of options here, I was carrying an old Kabar, so I could have just stabbed him, or I could have fought him and taken a beating, or I could leave. I left. My question is what is the right thing to do when somebody else is detecting in an area, how far away from them do you have to be? And how can somebody claim a public park area as theirs?
