    Hogge's Best of 2008

The British Revolutionary War Cartridge Box Sling Belt Tip has to be MY top find of 2008, both historically and monetarily. Am still in the process of gathering research on this piece, but I'll save the specifics for an upcoming story. The 1786 Vermontensium Copper should bring a very nice four figure at auction. At the time of this post it is on it's way to Stacks in Wolfboro N.H. for an upcoming sale. And then there was the KGIII Counterfeit Half Penny. Classified from Mike Ringo's dies as a 25-83A. One of only 3 known to exist and bringing a hammer price of $3,750 at Stacks Americana Sale back on Jan. 13th. We had 2 offers of $5,000 through private sales, but chose to auction it with Stacks. I don't regret it but, a lesson was learned. Some coins and relics that are well sought after by alot of collectors deserve the auction format. This particular coin, even though EXTREMELY RARE, had the interest of only a handful of collectors. As many could see from my posting, alot of T-Netters had no idea of what this type of coin was, or even with the date of 1783, how rare this actually was. Even I had no idea. If it wasn't for a few individuals on T-Net who, IDed this for me, It would be sitting in my collection of Counterfeit Half Pennies. But Instead I have a large check coming from Stacks in the next few weeks! I had an AWESOME year, with high expectations of an early thaw, and another (triple) banner year!

Have a couple spots in Eastern NY, but mostly Berkshire County in Western Ma. That's about as specific as I can get. I had a gentleman look at my 1786 Vermont the other day. Through conversation he said he metal detected long ago but now his detector just collects dust. Asked me the town I found this stuff in so I told him. Then he wanted specifics. I think he got the point when I told him the town again. He then went on to say that he hunted " The Old Dutch Settlement" in our area. We hunt that. But he doesn't hunt anymore. (Ya Right!) Whenever you find a gold mine, someone else will try to get the location out of you. I don't mind taking people to places as long as "I" invite them. That's why I'm careful what I say. There are several people on this site, that if were ever in my area, are MORE than welcome to contact me and hunt some of our favorite spots. (Nick, Don, IP, Buckles,Bob in Ohio,) There is still plenty of goodies out there to be found!
