I got my first true metal detecting for my birthday last year. It was a Garrett Ace 250. Well, its been a full year now and with the heavy snow I decided to hang it up for 2013. I went on dozens of hunts, found hundreds of relics through all four seasons. Most of my artifacts come from a single site a few miles from my house. I originally went to this site to clad hunt the baseball field. I love clad quarters as much as the next guy, but I like my relics a little aged. I noticed some rock walls in the woods surrounding the field and decided to go exploring. After a while, I found what was left of a concrete house foundation. The area around the house was very prolific, and I found artifacts from around 1770-1830 and 1880 all the way to the 50s. There had to be 3 or 4 dumps on the site, with various bottles and relics (mostly junk iron). It seems the place was equestrian based on the sheer number of mid 20th century horse buckles, saddle leather, horse shoes, and horse cure bottle relics I found. Though I found a bounty of flat buttons, bullets, colonial tools, and bottles, I found no old coins. My oldest coin is a 1913 blank Wheat cent. I'll find some colonial silver next year. I went to various sites in Connecticut, New York, and even New Hampshire. I cannot wait to see where 2014 will bring me! I stand by my idea that the Garrett Ace 250 is the best machine to start out this hobby.

Some coins and flat buttons. Included are some wheat cents, 3 silver Roosevelt dimes, a silver Washington, 40% JFK half, a Keene, New Hampshire Railway token, and a WW2 great seal button.

Some iron relics including Axe heads, horse shoes, a colonial hoe head, a wrench and even some early hand forged scissors.

A nice collection of spoons (and a fork) from the late 19th to mid 20th century.

Pepsi cola bottle

Two of my favorites finds- A Victorian Mourning Brooch? and a Druggist medicine bottle from the 1910s.

I did find my crap-ton share of clad this year. All of it including the Princess of clad, totaled over $21.00.

Yep. Just find a dump, get down on a knee, and prod away with your blade.
