Button fields seem to be common in some areas over in the UK where they burnt rags for making ash and it seems to fit this area also, but who's to say for sure. Lots of digging as the totals are crazy for anything comparable for over on this side of the pond. It could also be that it was a attempt to control one the smallpox outbreaks that occurred. Just common losses from activity seems to be a stretch as the coinage totals as well as other relics that would be higher one would think for the place.
Either way congrats on the totals and I'm sure there will be more added to the totals this season.

Incredible Matt! I've gotten in to a few big button producing sites, but none quite like yours. And I assume you're not finished there yet.

Just looking at your pics, it doesn't look like you have many " matching " buttons, so one would assume these were just lost and not from a burn site or dump. We can only guess, but that's part of the fun, isn't it? I hope circumstances allow you to keep hunting this site over many years.

Buttons are great, your site should give up great finds for years and years to come, I'm sure there is a few more hot spots hiding in those 30 acres!

    Nice finds!

Might have been a ragpickers place. Selling the old rags, but they had to take the buttons off first. Just a thought. Great finds.

What do you think was done on that property? Is it just because it was occupied straight through? Got to be more than that to find SO MANY buttons! It's amazing! I was blown away everytime you posted more. Great types and everything. That had to be a rush to hunt. Congrats! HH
