When I go to yard sales I always ask about old coins. Sometimes they will run inside and bring out a small box or jar full of coins. I am putting together a junk drawer auction on ebay and this coin was in the bunch I was going to photograph. I picked it up and decided it was interesting enough to research. I know I bought it in a bulk purchase but do not remember when or how much.

It is a copper Uruguay 1844 - 40 Centésimos coin with asking prices between $359 and $19,000.

Here are three I found:
Uruguay 1844 - 40 Centésimos - - 39 mm - KM# 3 - Variant SA 6.8.1 | eBay

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Uruguay-40...18-/192133486507?_trksid=p2141725.m3641.l6368

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Uruguay-40...18-/172146705562?_trksid=p2141725.m3641.l6368

I know I will not even get close to the higher prices. Any suggestions? Should I spend the money and get it slabbed?
I showed my wife and she told me to clean it. (she has no idea)

Dan,

I'm probably going against the flow here but my 2 cents for what it's worth. If you get it slabbed there's the cost involved and depending on which grading service some will even refuse to grade/slab what they consider damaged coins. With the verdigris they'd probably make comments like environmental damage or some such. The only plus is if it gets slabbed it more or less proves that it's not a counterfeit coin.

Maybe a compromise solution is send pictures of the coin to the grading service of your choice and ask their opinion.

Considering you probably got the coin for peanuts you'll make out like a bandit either way.

Regards + HH

IMHO, you should have the coin conserved, certified, graded and if it is a specific and more valuable Variety, then pay for the Variety Attribution.
