    "Big Pinky"

    Morning,

I'm not much on ascribing personal names to Indian artifacts. However, this point has ended up with the name, "Big Pinky". It's the only relic in my colection that has a name so you won't be seeing any "Big Brownies" or whatever...lol!

    Type: Gary

    Material: Heat Treated Novaculite

    Length: Five Inches

Recovery Area: South Caddo Parish, Louisiana

"Big Pinky" was recovered on a very slight rise along an old bayou channel in the 1970's. The field was pasture and cattle had eroded a trail going up the rise. Those unfamiliar with this type of domesticated animal erosion should imagine a "cut" about twenty inches wide and twelve inches deep where their hooves had worn a trail. This point had just fallen out and was laying on the edge of the trail and it is amazing that it was not damaged. Another point of slightly lesser size but of the same quality, material and manufacture was recovered at the same time at this location. No digging was done and the site is now in trees.

Both points exhibit fine micro edge work and are quite different than most Gary points that a person would expect to find and/or view in a collection of Gary's.

The reader should draw his/her own conclusions concerning why two points of this quality were found at the same place, just feet apart.

    Thanks for looking,

    spot

Spot that is a most wonderful fine. I am in a rural area and have found 3 or 4 points; they are about 1" or less and made of local material, which is white quartz, which is the major material. The are Morrow Mt. points. Again congrats and isn't it a shame hunting areas are growing up or not cultivated anymore?

    Re: "Big Pinky"

Very nice point Spot, and one helluva chunk of heated Novaculite. I don't believe it's a Gary though (darn the luck!..hehe), it looks like a very nice Petit Jean River point. Petit Jean were named for the River, in Logan Co. Arkansas. They can get quite large and are usually well made. Petit Jean are found in Arkansas, Northern Louisiana, Eastern Oklahoma and Northeast Tx. People easily get them confused with Gary or Dickson, but are barbed and much earlier.

Nice point. Novaculite is one of my favorite materials. Sounds like there must have been a cache there. I know some have been found underneath the floors of Archaic homesites sort of stacked on the edges together. Thanks for sharing.
Beer beer beer said the corporal, its hardly fair but none compares to the U.S. Cavalry!!
