I Found Another Bone Fish Hook!!!

I'm sure most of you one here are familiar with my finds from the Excavation Site I have been surface hunting for the past year or so. Well, after a 4 day period of almost killing myself working around the house on our remodeling project I thought I deserved a break and decided to hit the site after we had a good rain on Weds morning. I waited for the rain to slow to a drizzle and headed straight for the site.

When I arrived I could see it had rained a good bit and that the piles had washed down quite a bit and I immediately starting finding things as soon as I stepped in. Within 30 minutes of being there I had 3 bases off of Triangle Points, two Bones Beads, a couple nice Pottery Rim Shards(one with a nice Lug Handle), and a few other odds and ends. I was on the same end where the last Fish Hook came from and about maybe 20 feet from where I had found the first one when I decided to crawl up on top of one of the big piles and I saw the very distinctive "J" peeking out from inder a leaf. My first thought was it was a twig because I see those all the time shaped like a J and they always fool me. I reached up and touched it and new instantly I had struck gold again and found another Fish Hook. After 20+ years of hunting Ft Ancient sites and always hoping to find one of these bad boys, I had found two within a few months of each other.

I didn't find much else after that and actually really didn't care. lol This one is broken through the groove around the base which is a bummer, but it has a very nice and very sharp tip on it and I can just imagine an Indian catching a nice small mouth bass or a bluegill on it to feed his family.

Sorry, no in situs since it was still drizzling rain and I didn't want to get the camera wet.

Pic #1. The days haul which includes 3 Pottery Rim Shards, 6 broken Triangle Points, 4 Bone Beads(the two right next to the Hook are whole and the other 2 are broken), a tip off an Awl, A Deer Toe Tinkler, the Fish Hook, and the piece of Shell has a beveled edge on it like it may have been used as a Knife.

Pic #3. The piece of Mussell Shell. If you look closely you can see the beveled edge on it.

Pic 4 and 5. Close ups of the Fish Hook. These are a little blurry for some reason, but you can still see it well enough. You can see where the groove was at the top where it has broken through.

All in all, not a bad haul for less than 2 hours of hunting. It was definitely worth the trip just for the Fish Hook and the 2 nice Bone Beads.

Have you ever found a stone fish hook? I've seen a few but, honestly, they look like they just came up from the other side of the Rio Grande area!! Good work. You da man!

I have seen all kinds of Flint Fish Hooks and have never seen a good one. All of them are fake as far as I'm concerned.

Flintfinder, what are you wondering about? Like I stated in my original post, I didn't take the camera with me since it was still raining when I left the house and I didn't want to get it wet. The camera I use to take pictures with was very expensive and I really don't want to ruin it by getting it wet. Normally I take it with me to get in situs from this site and I probably have around 100 or more great in situ photos from there.

Tom, first off thanks for the comments. Second, I know you find a lot of Shell artifacts in your area, so what do you think about the Shell piece I have pictured? It looks like it has been beveled all along that one edge and I was thinking maybe it was used as a Knife. I've never really noticed this on any other pieces I've picked up there, but then again I've never really checked them that closely.(something I will be doing now. lol)

Just makes me wonder why everytime I don't have my cam, why I find some of the best artifacts I've ever found. Bone fish hooks are hard to come by, and I bet you wish you would have had it with you is all. Makes me wonder if you would have had it( your camera) if you would have found it, seems like some artifacts are camera shy is all. Sometimes it seems that if I take my cam out , and I know I'm gonna find something bad ask. NOTHING. when I go with out,, Bam an unbelievable find comes out of the hunt. Kinda crazy i think, but true. Like I said , nice find. If you read more into than that, its your problem. John

I see what you mean now and I agree 100%. It seems like it never fails that if I don't have my camera I find something killer and 9 times out of 10 if I do have my camera I find a couple of dinky little Scrapers.
