think the first is a broke gorget has nice engravings.think the second might be a bannerstone.both seem to be polished up nicely.

A very interesting gorget, I would go back over the years and look for the other half...you never know. The design looks to have a lot of power lines (zig zags) emanating from some point that was on the other part, I wish we could see the rest of it, we might learn a little more about what these people really believed in...cool find.

Whole or not, those are fantastic artifacts. The engraving on the first piece is phenominal! I just wonder what those markings mean, I'm guessing something spiritual

    Re: wish they were whole

I wonder if they were getting ready to salvage that Gorget since it shows what looks like the start of another hole and it is engraved. I know that most salvaged pieces will have tally marks or engraving on them and that could surely be a candidate for salvaging.

Very nice piece for sure though. Thanks for the look.

You have some neat artifacts. I really enjoy looking at them. I was thinking the same as Dorkfish. The turtle shell gorget you put on a couple days ago had an old break at one of the holes. The first thing I was thinking is they just might have made it into a pendant seeing they had so much work in to it. Never know. They are Some heart breakers for sure. John

    Re: wish they were whole

:icon_study Atlantis...very nice fragment, the more I see of these items, I`m convinced that these were personal and decorated by the maker, this is evident by the free hand style of light engraving and differing degrees of artistic ability, as compared to some of the weeping eye shell gorgets which were definitely made by skilled individuals who probably produced hundreds of examples.
Perhaps they were made blank and as events happened they were decorated as needed, maybe to commemorate certain achievements or when special powers were needed. Often these have "Tally marks" but I`m not sure if they really are tally marks or just some part of the design as most of the marks completely encircle the object, or end on one section, where if one were counting something it might stop part way up. Just thinking....

    Re: wish they were whole

    Afternoon,

I agree with your assertion that the "tally marks" are decoration....especially true on the gorget fragment in the picture. It would seem that the markings go the entire length of the piece. They are also perfectly spaced and similar in size which would indicate to me they were all done at the same time with the same tool. Just my thoughts. Would kill for the other half, but if everything was found whole then we wouldn't appreciate it near as much when it is.

    Happy Hunting,

    Atlantis

    Re: wish they were whole

It might be interesting to create a data base on these items, some of the designs show up more frequently than others and could be specific to a certain culture or time, while others might span several cultures or geographical areas. Many of the designs are found on pipes also. With today`s computers and internet capability who knows what might unravel. Good thread going a little deeper.
