where to look?

I live close to an area that was a native american winter camp. have permission to look for artifacts, but have only found chips so far, and lots of lead. the area is huge, & a little daunting as to where I should start. I look on the banks of the river, went to the middle of the field, found charcoal when I dug, so I figure that is camp fire. I look in areas that have been eroded, 'specially right after a rain, but so far just flakes of chert. any recommendations on how to narrow my search, & best areas? It is an encampment that is on an 800 acre site. the owner has shown me his points & they are beautiful! any hints?

Sounds like your doing the right thing,just keep looking if your able to dig work your way around to you find a hot spot, might also want to sift.Check the higher spots of the site,Keep at it you'll start finding them, good luck and post pics of your finds...

i have alot of luck around rivers and creeks i try to find a higher flat area with some flakes lying around and just start diggin around alot of times what looks like a chip is a point with portion stickin out of the ground good luck it gets easyer with each one you find

I wonder if you would have any luck sifting alittle around the fire area? Just a thought.

are there any springs on the property? If so I'd do a couple test digs around it. Check the dirt around larger trees that have fallen down. Find the highest ground that overlooks the whole site and check that area too. If I were you I'd be digging and sifting in the areas you've already found flakes and chips, I'd be really surprised if you didn't find a complete tool. You can waste alot of valuable time scouting for new spots.
