    Re: Where to DIG

Just go to where the most flint is and sift it. If it was me though I'd try to get in the woods so that I could take my time and not have to refill my hole when planting comes. The river land sounds better though. Sounds like you shouldn't have to dig there. I've had a little luck just raking the woods.Of course it should be a little sloped for that to work.

Yeah I would start where the most debris is,mark out a 4x4' square and dig it 3 or so foot deep or you hit a hardpan.Just keep digging sqaures it'll pay off.Digging in the woods is a beech have a good ax or hand saw or battery operated saws all for dealing with roots,if you dont screen try to pile the dirt in one spot and go thru it by the shovel load.good luck

    Re: Where to DIG

I'd make a tripod from three metal or wood round rod. drill a hole in each about 1.5 to 3" down. Then get some chain. Next I would make a shaker box about4-5' x 4-5' square get some chicken wire and a staple gun. staple the wire mesh to the outside of the wooden box you will make they have corners of metal that you just put in place then screw. Get four eye screws and screw them to the four corners. when it stands the box hangs below and you or a friend can shovel in dirt to sift. If you are alone I suggest getting several 5 gallon buckets and fill them then dump them into the box about half at a time. Like pickaway says mark off it in sections and keep a journal of the finds and the depth. Also make homemade maps of the field. And where you find what. Sorry so long. But I hope this helps. I know most here already know how to do this but I figured there are some "Lurkers" who may not.
