    #1 Son found a Clovis!

My oldest son found this Clovis in a creek yesterday. I'm very happy for him. He doesn't get to go with my third son and I most of the time, cause he's starting a family. He has always been the most like me about the outdoors. He is a bait catching extraodinare. The loped ear appears to have flake scars on the break, and the blade appears to be resharpened, but I'm not schooled in such things. This helps him catch his bro, who's killing us, so they are both very excited. The memory of that excitement, that's the treasure I collect.

Re: #1 Son found a Clovis!

Glad I didn't blow-by this post, that's a very nice Clovis. Is there any way you could take a picture of the break (profile view?). I'd like to see if it exhibits certain features, as in being used as a graver. I have examined many Clovis now that were multi-functional tools, such as having the auricles made into graver spurs, chisel tipped, spokeshaves in abundance, etc.

Thanks folks! I'll let him float around for awhile, then I'll start squeezing his head until it returns to normal size.

    Congrats to your son!

That is indeed an exceptional find and it is obviously made of a high grade of material! Any Iowa folks recognize the type of stone?

I like the multiple flute/thinning flakes on the one side, the knapper was intent on getting that base thinned the way he wanted it. The one auricle is interesting and I too would like to hear Matt’s interpretation of it.

Re: #1 Son found a Clovis!

That corner does appear to have been worked and utilized. The pictures clearly show intentional flake modification in there. I would bet dollars to donuts that it was indeed a graver on the end. As I said, I've noticed that on several true Clovis points and it only goes to show how crafty they were.

I mention true Clovis points, because it seems 80%+ of them proclaimed to be, aren't. The vast majority seem to be misidentified or the authenticity is questionable. Think about this. How many people do you personally know that have found Clovis points? Most collectors haven't, and won't. Yet most collectors seem to have "Clovis" points in their collections.

It's refreshing to see that Clovis point bean!

Thanks Matt, that's great. Especially since we just thought the ear was broke off for the first 24 hours, with passing thoughts of restoration. Even after I noticed that they might of done it, I still wasn't sure. Thanks again!
