Re: 2 big hammers and a groove pounding tool(?)

Thanks , They are sized about like a big cantaloupe and a medium cantaloupe
    They are granite
I dont know what type of rock the small tool is
I had an old Sioux Indian lady tell me that they used these for horse tethers quite a bit
She had a big bunch of them in the basement of the Catholic church in Fort Yates on the standing Rock Res.
She said the ones that did not have marks on them from hammering with them were probably horse tethers
    Thanks, Steve

hmm, tether a horse, that's interesting, I figured it was a two handed hammer for driving posts in the ground. Here's the one I found last year, it does lack use wear, weighs just under 16 lbs.

Re: 2 big hammers and a groove pounding tool(?)

Yup that is a horse tether-if it was a hammer where are the marks from usage?
The older Sioux Lady told me that these were tied to about a 20 foot leather leader and placed in fresh grass
when the horse ate all of the good stuff within reach he could pull it to a new spot
come morning he might be in a different spot but the horse would not be far away
the collection in the church basement office was in a glass case about 20 feet long
and I estimate there was at least 75 of these
about half she said were horse tethers
    this was in about 1975
    thanks steve

Here is one big 3/4 groove from eastern South Dakota. It weighs 13.5 pounds, and there is no use wear on either end of it.
