I was bound and determined to take some in situ pictures for the first time. I had visions of holding a nice CW CS buckle and my camera snapping away. So I got up early and got my metal detector and headed out to a site I have been wanting to try. On the way there I took the back road(mistake) and saw one of my old fields and it looked like it had been flattened by the rain. Well I pulled over grabbed my flipping stick and never made it to my metal detecting site.
The finds are not that great but I did take a camera. I found two decent points and one scraper and lots of brokes and drops. Sorry I ended up flipping more than clicking but its a start. This site is early woodland and has no bone or pottery. The plow has chewed it up for years and it has slowed down on finding much decent stuff.
I have so enjoyed seeing everyones in the field photos on here and I had to give it a try. Hopefully the pictures and finds will be better when we start hitting the rivers in a couple of weeks.
The metal detector will have to wait as well.

Those are good pics Tn, I like that blue flint, nice material. I've got a triangular point exactly like the one you found, concave base and cortex on both ears. thanks for sharing.

Aw your welcome thrty7. It was more fun to me than pulling out something I had already found. Now days finding one point can be a good day and the camera thing was fun.Good news is got permission to hunt a valley field where only one flint material is found. Its real rare and a beautifil brown. Excited. They are the same type with the concave base and cortex ears.

Those are wonderful pictures, TnMountains! It was hard for me to train myself not to pick the point up before taking the pictures! And isn't it hard to decide whether to go metal detecting or arrowhead hunting?
You did good!
Kind regards~~sandcreek4

Hay Tn Mountain , I'd say " you don't have to get better , ..just a bit luckier" your pic's are great !! As Bent-twig & others have said , I too love the insitu pic's ! Now , I don't "point-hunt" out here in California anymore , but I have started tak'n "insitu" pic's of Gold-Nuggets when I'm out "Nugget-shoot'n". I must say , it does take a bit of self-control to reach for the camera , rather then the point/ nugget , ... that's just fighting nature , that is !!
thank's for the look , Blindpig

Yes its very hard to decide which one but you all have inspired me
Thanks gregrocks Americus and yes Blindpig it is very hard to do. I took a lot on my hands and knees to only find a broken one or a knapped piece. One I got I just flipped and it was a snapped stem base style which I really like.
Thanks Jamey I am glad I went also and look forward to you coming this way for a river hunt one day this summer.

Excellent pictures Tn. I wish the first in situ pictures I took were as sharp as yours.
I started taking in situ pictures a little over 30 years ago using a small pocket 110 film camera. The camera lens was made of plastic and the film negatives were about the size of your thumbnail. I would take the film in to be developed and printed and rarely would the colors be right, needless to say the pictures were a little short on quality.
The main thing is I have recorded some pictures of past finds that bring back good memories every time I look at them. As the years go by I know you will be glad you took pictures of your in situ discoveries. I suggest not only taking pictures of your in situ finds but also some overall views of the immediate terrain. Find-site views of interesting landscape features provide additional visual information of what the terrain looks like where the find was made.
I know I always like to see views of other people's hunting areas, whether it is a meandering stream, the dessert, mountain foothills or cultivated fields.
With today’s digital technology you can take all the pictures you want and immediately see a micro picture of the results …sure wish I had that that 30 years ago.
I will be looking forward to seeing your future pictures.

The picture below is a scan of two old printed photographs so the picture quality is not very good.

That is by far one of the best in-situ picture I have ever seen. The panoramic veiw with that blade laying there for hundreds maybe thousands of years is breathtaking. That photo really tells a story in itself. I think you should do a post saying post your best in-situ picture here and start with that one.
Being a novice I think what I was trying to show was just the in-situ never being touched and then removed from that exact spot and showing the spot where it lay. Your veiw gives me a better perspective of what to try for. I think I may have been thinking a little narrow minded.
Of course a little bigger artifact might have helped mine,,,LOL
Do you still have that find??
Thanks for the advice and sharing the picture.

Yes Tn, I still have that find. I have never sold any of my personally found prehistoric artifacts, however I have given several away.
This large biface was a streambed find and water-wear makes it somewhat difficult to see some of the flaking.
The material is Spanish Diggings ortho-quartzite from southeastern Wyoming.
