A R&D DAY IN PA

Decided to play hookey from work Friday to do some "cold-calling" R&D for artifact sites in southeastern PA. Found two farms along a decent-sized stream which produced a number of broken/expended points and scrapers, the best two of which are shown in the photo. One field also yielded the eroded George II English half penny, which shows that this field has been farmed since colonial times. Only traces of the "17" remain of the date, but George II died in 1760, so the coin was minted no later than that date.

The two points in the photo are Archaic stemmed points - possibly Pequea points. They are well made of high quality quartzite, and a complete specimen of one of these would be a killer. While this group of points obviously could be improved upon, there is no reason that these fields might not yield complete pieces in future visits.

And regarding future visits, both farmers could not have been more friendly, and it is clear they would allow me to return another time. In addition to enjoying a lovely spring day away from work, I would say that the artifact R&D was successful.

I never hunted Indian artifacts before but I am planning to hit a field this weekend.

Great hunt and way to go on the coin. Did they give you permission to metal detect? One field I hunt I metal detect and look for arrowheads at the same time. That is the best of both worlds.

Actually, I do not own a metal detector - I just surface collect for Native American artifacts. A friend of mine who does metal-detect pointed out that if there is one colonial penny on the surface, there is a good chance that more old coins are buried in that field.

I would have to ask permission specifically to metal-detect, but I suspect that the farmer would allow that.

You must find some great CW relics down your way in Tennessee.

I have been digging civil war stuff from my yard for several years. Evertime I think I will post it I go hunt one more time and find more. i am now doing the neighbors. He had a concrete fountain lined with 3 ringers he dug while digging the pond. Its finding time like everything else.Take care.
