That's a very nice piece larson. I've never seen one like it but I would say it's a grooved celt. Maybe someone has seen one like it before.

Man, that IS the find of the year. BANNER?

Re: THE FIND OF THE YEAR!! (for me anyway)
RPG, the reasons I think it was mounted on a shaft instead of a handle are;
if it was a hoe I think it would be more crude and not so nicely made
it is not grooved, it is notched, it is too thin to be grooved on each side
it seems like it would be way off balance to be a celt, judging by how close to the back the notches are
does this make sense?
I value yours and any other opinions
thanks much, Larson 1951

Re: THE FIND OF THE YEAR!! (for me anyway)
that is a killer piece!incredible find.that would be a notched celt in my book, have seen one found in ohio that is alot like yours but the notches are a just a little more closer to the center, and made out of bluish/grayish igneous stone similiar to yours. probably some kind of specialized tool.congrats

Larson.. in one of Hothems books he mentions notched celts (as many of you know im sure)
not a lot of info, but a few drawings, and pics are in it! Also could be a T-top axe, specialty
celt,or a unique design.
I found something somewhat similar, but not really sure.. It shows no sign of wear, and a bit different than yours.

Re: THE FIND OF THE YEAR!! (for me anyway)
That is a killer piece larson. I can see why it's your find of the year. It doesn't look like it has a blade on it, so I guess Celt or Axe is not an option unless they just never polished the blade onto it. I'm not really sure what it is, but it is definitely one very cool artifact.
Congrats on the find and thanks for sharing the pictures.

i did not see it on a link larson1951,i have actually seen the piece i was refering too, guess i should have said that, duh.my uncles friend found one maybe 3 years ago or so and i got to see it.I will work on getting a pic of it for you and any info i can from the guy who found it.dorkfish mentioned no blade on it,which got me thinking maybe that piece wasnt finished yet or never got used.you would think the notches would be more polished than they appear if it had been used I gotta tell you again that is a great find!how much of it was exposed when you walked up on it??
aint gonna find any heads sittin on the couch

Re: THE FIND OF THE YEAR!! (for me anyway)
greg-rocks, if you look at the first image I posted, you will see that the
cleaner part of the piece is the only part that was exposed
which gave no clue as to what it was
it actually looked like a plain rock until I pushed it out of the ground with my foot, and then.................
