    Are they game balls ??

2 balls found in Cedar City Utah on top of a big flat hill. Are they game balls ? Why are they are flat on one side ? A line is running around the circumference of the balls just above the flat spots. Why is that ?
    Thanks

Re: Are they game balls ??

Hard to say 100% what they are for sure, but they are for sure artifacts and nice ones, Nice find

I personally suspect they are net weights, but it's possible they could also be a type of game piece. Most net weights had the etched line around them and the size fits, but the dimple on top is a little strange. Looks almost like one side of a discodial stone, if the stone were not so small.

I have seen, and I have several nice discodial stones, and some are small, but never seen one that small, I do not think it is one in process of being made. I have couple arrowheads that I found that are points that were never finished, so you can find pieces that were being worked on and never finished.

    Nice finds........

I have a dozen or so white balls like that. I heard they came from a sewage treatment plant and are ceramic. Then I heard they were milling balls from a factory of some sort and were porcelain. If they are milling balls then they might be discarded after they chip.

My comments are based on the items being stone, which is what they look like in the pictures.

    Good luck..........

Re: Are they game balls ??

    GL,

I hope my comment didn't come off wrong. I was just saying that my comments were based on the objects being made out of stone, looks like quartz to me..

From my collection, here is a artifact bowl with some various size stone game balls and discodials on either side. Quarter is for size reference. The bowl is over 400 years old, and part of a 3 piece set I bought over 17 years ago. Game balls use to be mounted on cardboard years ago. I no longer do that.

No worries! You should have seen my face when I found those!

The color and line just reminded me of the ones I found. Nice stuff by the way. I have yet to find a whole pot.

Re: Are they game balls ??

Hi again, i got the weight of them. They weight 1lb. each, and i think they are porcelain. They was found south of Cedar City Utah on a big flat top mountain. Also that they were found not close together. It was about 25 years ago. Industry near there ,i don't know.

    Thanks everyone

Good chance they are tumbling rocks used to polish in mills. Being porcelain would seem to kinda narrow down its date of manufacture. They do look like game balls other than the flat area on them. Lets see what some of these rock experts say. Seems like I read this in the whatisit forum.
    Cool finds.

Even if you had a gameball everyone on the forums try to say they're pioneer marbles or burnishing stones.
    Good luck.

Now that you mention it I dont remember seeing many game balls posted on here. Come to think of it I am not sure my round rocks are gameballs at all other than being found in with arrowheads ,they could be anything. We often thought they were also used to heat liquids in clay vessels. Maybe they are just round rocks.

Not sure as you stated ,about a 1lb porcelain round ball with indentions. Did they not have a round clay or ceramic target ball that was used in shooting. The indention would make sense as they would not roll away from you on a flat surface. I dont know what they are.

Ceramic balls from a check valve or that they are tumbling rocks used to polish in mills. Never seen any before.

So thanks allot for the fun I had reading the replies that everyone sent.
