Does this point appear to be apple creek?

Still learning on point identification....spent a bunch of time with my Overstreet book and best I can come up with is Apple Creek? Found in Northeast Missouri in a creek. I think it is made of Mozarkite which is the Missouri state rock.

I agree that it's most likely an Apple Creek. I disagree with that point typology page though, especially the distribution range. Apple Creek are thought to be related to (and often found associated with) Steuben points. They are terminal Hopewell points, but they tend to get confused with other similar, but older, forms to the west.

I have a couple minutes to spare, so I will ramble. I'm not sure your piece is Mozarkite, but it could be. Here's some useless information for you. "Mozarkite" is actually not a real chert, but a nickname. It combines the words Missouri and Ozarks - where it is generally found. It's actually a type of Jefferson City Dolomite - its true name is Jeff City type "2". There are many different types of Jeff City, even a spotted oolitic variety. There also is a Cotter Dolomite (which JC may be considered a part of) which looks just like "Mozarkite". There are Cotter Dolomite outcroppings and formations from Eastern Oklahoma over into Illinois. It's colors include white, grey, brown and it can be mottled or have concentric rings. The most common is probably a mottled white & gray. Some of it is far more knappable than others. There is a localized variant here called Eucha that looks gorgeous, but it's pretty fractured so isn't the best for knapping. It's not ALWAYS multi-colored (depending on where in the formation it came from) and it's not hard to mistake it for Burlington, Roubidoux, Keokuk, Peoria or others at times. Ramble over.

Re: Does this point appear to be apple creek?

Thanks for the comments Thirty and Neanderthal....

I find a lot of large pieces of what I have been calling Mozarkite....usually having a course white outer layer with orange or brown or gray "glassy" inner core. The point I showed above looks like and has the same texture as a lot of those rocks. I have yet to find a point made of just the core of this rock and this is the first I've found that has the appearance of coming from the cortex. I have to work the next six nights in a row then I'm off to Canada to fish for Walleye for a week. When I get back I'll try to make time to run out to the farm and collect some samples of raw stone...maybe some of you folks can tell me what it is.
